NORAID and PIRA
The
Irish Northern Aid (NORAID) was an Irish-American support group that came to
fruition during the Northern Ireland Conflict founded in 1970. In the United
States, they helped funding and spreading propaganda for Ireland. In the
beginning, NORAID wanted to gain support from Irish-Americans during the
conflict. This group faced hostility in the United States and believed that
they were under fire. They wanted to show that they were “loyal Americans” and
stressed their patriotism and contributions to America. They eventually decided
to help the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA). They had close ties with
this group and wanted to help those that were persecuted for advocating for
Irish independence. The connection between the two groups did not look good to
Americans and they were not fond of the idea that they were providing money for
weapons. This is why NORAID attempted to help the Provisional Irish Republican
Army.
